how much air should be in my tires

I think they put 32psi into each tire on my 255/45-17 they look a little low wondering if I can put more air into them. They say 44psi is max thinking about running 40psi. What ya think?

Anywhere from 30-40 is generally fine. It's pretty much whether you want tighter handling and better fuel economy (higher pressure) or a softer ride and more grip (lower pressure)

800,000,000 PSI should work just fine.

The max ratng on the sidewall means what the tire can hold when expanding. So by puttung 40psi in a tire thats has a 44psi max doesn't leave much room for expanding air when the tire heats up which can end badly...I would just put stock 32psi..read the sticker on your rear passenger door..(if it's still there) Radials are suposed to have a lil budge at he bottom.

Read your owners manual or the door sticker.

The max on the tire is the max pressure the tire can handle, not the CAR manufacturers specification.

The proper way to do it is a chalk mark across the tread and adjust it until the mark is evenly worn.

Maxing a tire out might make it seem like it handles better becuase the tire will react quicker, but more times than not will have less overall grip because the over inflation leaves less of a contact patch on the road.

definitely dont max them out... they are difference size rims and tires than the car was designed for, therefore you are re-engineering the vehicle...Id stick with 30-32

And Explorers were sent out with 26psi door stickers....

I'd run them around 38-40, but as Mikey sayeth....the chalk mark doesn't lie.

Thats the cold inflation pressure. You can safely run 44 psi cold, and the air will not expand past the tire's safety limitations.

The chalk line is very valid, and you'll find the optimal pressure changes even with tire brands. I used to run 40, but the new tires like 35. The Mark VII likes 32. I really should chalkline them just to see how my seat of the pants adjustments compare to a real test tho.

I run mine at 50psi, max is 55. Chalk line says 50psi in 235/75-15 offroad truck tires in 6.5"-wide turbine wheels under a 4000 lbs Lincoln is a very good combination. Handling and ride, as expected, suck. Oh well, at 55mph it matters none, I got all the traction I need all year round
