i picked up an 86 grand marquis from a member on the forum a few weeks ago. its been running pretty well but lately after driving for more than 5 minutes a burning smell and smoke starts coming from the driver side rear wheel. i think its from the brakes, i dont know anything about drum brakes but the brake pedal pulsates when i push on it and is really mushy. when i put new wheels on for a test fit i put it on this side. i pushed the brake drum as far back and i could is it possible smoke is coming from the brakes? anyone have any idea whats going on?

Id suspect a wheel cylinder is leaking fluid onto a hot warped drum.Pete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements

Either a wheel cylinder or perhaps an axle seal. Pull the drum off and see what you can see. Does it smell like anything in particular?

Pulsating pedal = there's at least one warped rotor or out of round drum on the car. If the car's background is unknown, I'd start by having the drums turned as soon as you fix the fluid leak.
Mushy pedal = air in brake lines (typically). May be time to bleed the brakes.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

You can isolate it front to back by using the parking brake. If the car makes that same vibration with the parking brake, its the drums. If not, its the front rotors. I'd strongly suggest rebuilding both rear brakes. If one is bad, the other is not far behind. Check the front brake parts and hoses while you're at it, they may not be much better.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

i dont understand what you mean by isolating it.. when should i put the parking brake on and test this? also i should have mentioned this before this problem started after i put the parking brake on for the first time. even though i pulled the handle and it says its fully disengaged, it could just be a coincidence, maybe its sticking

Translation: if you apply the parking brake gently while driving, it will be engaging only the rear brakes. If you get a shudder, one or both drums are out of round and they should be turned. If the braking is smooth, there is runout in the front rotors and those need to be turned.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

If you just started using the parking brake and it hadn't been used for some time before that, it's entirely possible that the cable that runs to the rear brakes was rusty enough that when you went to release it, it didn't actually release. I'll bet your rear brakes are somewhat applied all the time right now.

Give the cable that runs under the driver's side floor pans a tug. Thats what I have to do to fully release my e brake.**2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302: 5.0/ 6 spd/ 3.73s, 20K Cruiser

that cable goes on the bottom thing that is sitting on the adjuster on the bottom, the one that already has a spring on it inthe first pic.
Looks like the adjusters are siezed, and the axle seals are leaking. Did the drum come off easily? Might just be the parking brake dragging that caused the smoke. The parking brake cables are probably stuck and made the brakes drag.Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons

there isn't any point reattaching the cable. It's for the self adjusting brakes, and the adjusters are completely seized. You need to take the brakes apart and clean the hardware up or replace it.Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons
