    axle:new or used?

my right axle has a pretty bad groove cut into it due to bearing going bad a couple times. i put in a repair bearing which straddles the bad spot last year and works fine but i just aint comfortable knowing what that axle looks like for long term. is a junkyard axle worth the risk compared to the price of a new one? even with an axle change i'm gonna use repair bearings on both sides when i pull it back apart cause those things are heavy duty as hell compared to replacement bearings. thanks all

I think new ones are about 100 bucks. I just use driver side ones, they usually aren't worn.

any axle 79-91 should be the same... I've personally swapped em around from 86-89.

i'm running repair bearings on my car. $26 beats $150+ for a new axle. Its dead silent, and hasn't given me any problems. I recently ran it for a 780 mile trip, no issues. In another week I'll run it back home. I figure if I can get another 50k out of these dead old axles it'll be well worth it. In the meantime I do plan on locating some nice virginal looking DS axles. Both mine were actually messed up. They aren't grooved extensively, but the surface that the bearing rides on is rough and it was causing a humming vibe. 160k of rough life, I can't say they haven't put their time in. All things considering, they look a hell of a lot better than some I've seen.

yeah the last time my regular bearing went out it got in such a bind that it took all day to get the axle out.left a helluva groove in the axle. hopefully i'll be posting pics soon and will take one of it. its unbelievable. those repair bearings really are worth their weight in gold.
