Does anyone have any ideas on putting a 9 inch in a Panther? I thought about getting one that is meant for a Fox body or pulling the one from my dads 65 Galaxie but I'm not sure if the control arms would be in the same spot.

I was just mentioning in the convertible thread that I noticed under a '77 or '78 Marquis that it had a 9" with a four-link. No guarantee the mounts are in the same place, but it might be worth looking into. Of course, your Galaxie mounts may well be very similar to the ones I saw under that Marquis.
Or you could just buy any 9" in an appropriate width, preferably with a nodular case, and weld on Panther mounting brackets.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

All I really know about the 8" is that it's a removable-carrier design and looks sort of like the 9" externally. It was used on base-model first-gen Mustangs though at least '68, and I think two-barrel small-block models as well. No idea what else they went into.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

the 8" looks just like the 9"......just the housing is a little smaller......my 77 ltd's rear had a cover on it........8" and 9" rears do not have a cover

All the mounting points are wrong. You will have to make all new mounts for the axle.
