TC Aluminum Driveshaft?

Did any Town Cars have an aluminum driveshaft I can use on my '89? I can use a combo joint if needed (that's what I did on the wagon)... gonna be swapping U-joints soon and want to go aluminum if I can find one. It doesn't hurt as much when they fall on me.

Don't think Townies ever got an aluminum driveshaft, Crown Vics did, two types actually, but a crown vic shaft is a bit shorter than the TC one IIRC.

i have have seen aluminum driveshafts on box townys.....they are uber rare

I'd bet you could get one from a newer Town Car to fit...at least on the new ones, all of 'em come with aluminum shafts, don't they?

I've actually found them on 3-4 different Box Towncars and late model Box Marquis's,in the boneyard.Never on a LTD Vic yet though.

I'm gonna keep looking and hoping I get lucky. I'd imagine it would possibly improve mileage.

The one I had on my wagon was from a '95. Just have to swap the yoke and pinion flange adapter to the later model shaft using a combination U-joint. $30 for an aluminum driveshaft ($15 for shaft, $15 for joints) is hard to argue.

a customer at work has a 90 Vic with an aluminum shaft... every time it comes in I am tempted to steal (swappie swap)

:lol: ,that could end up being very bad.......unless the owner never looks under the car and are pretty much completely clueless about what they have.

It's actually not uncommon at all to find aluminum driveshafts on Box Townys in the yards around here,almost all of them have been damaged beforehand though.Like I said I've only found 3-4 Which were not damaged,and 2 of those had been pulled prior to putting the car on the Forklift and thrown inside the car.I didn't bother getting them for myself because I'm fine with the stock steel shaft for now.

Scott,I really wish I would have known you were interested in them.The last time I was there 2 weeks ago,there was one already pulled,in mint condition,sitting inside of a 91 Marquis.I figured no one here would be interested after they saw how much the total w/ shipping was gonna be.I'll be on the lookout for ya from now on though.

you sand a steel one down, spray it with aluminum paint, and throw on some colored striped.

Actually it just may - Townie wheelbase is 3" longer, tranny tail is 2" over the CV/MGQ, that leaves the shaft only 1" or so short - any good machinist should be able to make you a 1"-thick steel spacer, I'd probably just bolt it to the pinion flange with recessed grade-8 allen bolts then bolt up the driveshaft to the spacer at 45* off stock orientation...
