Shuddering on braking - is it suspension?

    This has got me beat.

Braking has always been a little rough since I have had the car ('86 TownCar).

    Front (Disks):
    - New pads L & R
    - Both rotors turned last week (absolutely no change!)

    Rear (Drums):
    - New shoes L & R

    Nothing let to change!

So .. got me wondering - maybe is something in the suspension?? Or the brake assembly ??

    What do you experts reckon??

Did you turn the rear drums? They get pretty bad some times.

Yeah, rear brakes usually have a lot to do with making the whole car shake, if they are out of round.

Check your tie rod ends, pitman arm and idler arm. A caliper hanging can cause problems also.

Oh! I was under the impression that drums never go out of round.

Guess I was wrong! How common is this?

Meanwhile - Will rip them off and have 'em done.

          Thanks

There are tons of causes on a car as old as ours.

The drums, tie rods, and other worn steering parts can cause it.

if your parking brake works, lightly apply it while coasting at like 40 mph......if you feel the shaking, the rear drums are warped.....make sure to keep one hand on the release lever lol

The Handbrake test was definitive! Yep - same 'shudder'.

So ... will focus on the drums (shoes are new) when I get time.

Should I go straight for sending them to a shop to be machined - or some other plan B?

I'd try having them machined first. They should be able to check to see if they're in tolerance enough to be machined. It will most certainly be cheaper than replacement drums, especially for you considering the shipping. If they can't machine them true again, I guess you're stuck buying new drums.

Could be tires too. Real worn out tires will give a vibration while braking.

tires will just shake and shimmy, it won't show up only with the emergency brake like he's describing. Thats an out of round drum symptom.
