I've been looking around the site and haven't found all the answers i need so i'l ask em here. I got a K code rear axle out of an '85 CV to put in the merc. Everyone suggests rebuilding the trac-loc unit, i've heard from some people that its easy, and from others its a pain in the ass. I found this Link on rebuilding a rear end and it makes it sound like hell on earth: http://www.corral.net/tech/drivetrain/gears.html.
1) Does rebuilding just the trac-loc unit involve all of that or is it a lot more simple? It seemed like in that article that rebuilding the pinion was a huge pain and involved a lot of adjustment afterwards. If rebuilding the trac-loc unit is simpler than that, what exactly does it involve, and will i need to re-adjust everything so it meshes properly like the article says, or is that only if you remove the pinion.
2) The rear disk brake part doesn't seem too complicated, just need to get the backing plates, rotors, callipers, e-brake stuff, etc. off the parts car, but do the axles need to be taken out to remove this stuff or to be added to the k code axle i bought?
3) While i'm installing the new axle i figure i should put in some new controll arm bushings. How exactly are you supposed to remove the old ones, and get new ones in? Is it possible to do without special tools? Any other advice you have for this process would be greatly appreciated, or even reminders on stuff that might seem obvious. Looking forward to getting this all done. Thanks in advance...
