    differential and disk brake questions

I've been looking around the site and haven't found all the answers i need so i'l ask em here. I got a K code rear axle out of an '85 CV to put in the merc. Everyone suggests rebuilding the trac-loc unit, i've heard from some people that its easy, and from others its a pain in the ass. I found this Link on rebuilding a rear end and it makes it sound like hell on earth: http://www.corral.net/tech/drivetrain/gears.html.

    1) Does rebuilding just the trac-loc unit involve all of that or is it a lot more simple? It seemed like in that article that rebuilding the pinion was a huge pain and involved a lot of adjustment afterwards. If rebuilding the trac-loc unit is simpler than that, what exactly does it involve, and will i need to re-adjust everything so it meshes properly like the article says, or is that only if you remove the pinion.

    2) The rear disk brake part doesn't seem too complicated, just need to get the backing plates, rotors, callipers, e-brake stuff, etc. off the parts car, but do the axles need to be taken out to remove this stuff or to be added to the k code axle i bought?

    3) While i'm installing the new axle i figure i should put in some new controll arm bushings. How exactly are you supposed to remove the old ones, and get new ones in? Is it possible to do without special tools? Any other advice you have for this process would be greatly appreciated, or even reminders on stuff that might seem obvious. Looking forward to getting this all done. Thanks in advance...

As long as you don't pull the pinion, you do not have to adjust anything. The trak-loc is all self contained.

traction lock rebuild is not terrible. the most frustrating part is installing the new S spring then getting the C-clips on the axle and getting the spider gear cross pin back in. this is even more difficult if you set the clearences up tighter or do the +1 friction plate modification. I think it took Scott and I about 2 hrs to get my trac-lock put together then I had to hammer to cross pin in place (I dread ever having to take it apart in the future)
patience and good/proper tools will get you through, an extra pair of hands is also helpful.

Yes you have to pull the axles on both rear ends to swap the backing plates. I would highly recommend new axle bearings and seals while you got it apart. dont be surprised if the one or more of the axles is pitted at the bearing surface, this seems to be normal for most panther chassis cars. hopefully you can come up with a useable pair between the 4 you will have.

Personally, I would leave the bushing that in there. unless they are just falling part, the stock stuff works. I re-used the bushings in the K-code Scott and I pulled out of an 84 town car, bushings still looked new.

BTW.. make sure you cut the metric brake line fittings off the rear disc car, you will need those to flare onto your brake lines to connect the rear caliper hoses.

Ok, so the trac-lock part doesn't seem to hard.

          hoses.
Well, the bushings in the axle dont look terrible, but they definitely arent new. If i did want to replace them would i need special tools or anything to remove/replace them?

I wen to the junk yard today and found a '93 gm to pull the disk brakes off. I wasn't able to get the axles out though, and didn't have much time to screw with them before the place closed. I got the spider gears out and unbolted the little bracket that goes from the axle to near the calliper, but what is holding the callipers on? I see there are 4 bolts behind the rotor, that just seem to turn but dont come out, but i didn't see much else i could take off. I'm assuming there is something really stupid i missed because i was hot and frustrated.

Bushings need a press to come out, can do it with a ball joint press fairly easily, may need to get creative with a piece of pipe or a flat piece of steel or something to get it to work. I think we used a flat plate up against the back part of the bushing to put the press up against when it got run in there.

2 bolts hold the caliper on. unbolt the caliper and remove it, take the rotor off, disassemble the rear diff, slide the axles out, take off the 4 nuts/bolts that hold the backing plate on. tap on the back of the backing plate with a hammer to dis-lodge it from the axle tube.

Thanks for all the help. I went back today to get the disk brakes and that '93 GM got crushed, but i found a '97 CV PI and got the disks off of that. Went smoothly, one of the c-clips on the axle was a bit of a pain though. Anyone know of a good place to get a trac lock rebuild kit with everything i need. Linky?

The disk brakes i got have the little abs thing like in this pic, and i was wondering what i should do with it, should i just cut the line and leave that little thing in there to plug the hole or should i leave it out and put something else in its place?

might as well leave it. It doesn't matter all that much really, just plugs a hole. I dont know what the non-abs models had, probably a rubber plug in the hole or something.

Finally got to working on this again. Got the old outer bearings and seals out, and put new ones in today. Put the backing plates back on, cleaned off all the old rust and dirt of the axle. primered it and painted it black. still need to get a track lock rebuild kit, new coils, bushings and a pumpkin cover though. whats the best way to press on new bearings (the ones on either side of the actual track lock unit?) can it be done without a special press?

Trac lock unit is rebuilt. I didn't have much trouble with the s spring, clamped it in a vice, and put two hose clamps on. pushed the spring in place and cut off the clamps, 10 minutes maybe, that was a relief. Differential bearings were a royal bitch to remove and replace. Old axle is almost out of the car, but i broke a 12 point socket getting the universal joint bolts off, so i'm done for today. Got some sedan variable rate cargo coils to put in, and some poly bushings. This project has finally put my air tools to good use
