here are a couple pics of mikes broken steering column it happened after the first heat mike checked because it was leaking fluid but then he noticed it was really bad the u joints were shot also the bearings were bad also I guess 168k on the steering shaft and autocross take there toll here are the pics

Oh, so it was the shaft inside the column that broke, not the intermediate down in the engine bay?

Niether, the bearing retainer came out and the shaft slid out... Never broke the shaft...
