    Dog Dish Question

I'm thinking I may put some of the '90-'91 style dog dishes on teh Wagon. I'm used to dog dish-style hubcaps being retained by raised areas on the outside of the center of the wheel. That's confusing sounding, see the attached picture for a better explaination of what I am talking about.

The original wheels on the wagon don't have those provisions. Do the dog dishes mount to the inside of the center somehow?

Dog dishes, at least the ones like mine, mount to those nubs on the outside, which are only found on the 15x.6.5" police rims. If you want dog dishes, you gotta find yourself a set of those.

Ahh that's what I was afraid of. I'll have to check my '71 Merc. Maybe it has the nubs to mount 'em on. I know it has 15in wheels, but I think they are prolly 6in wide.

...Kicking myself for not buying those P72 steelies...

On the other hand, I have a set of 14in wheels of my '82 and I'm pretty sure they have the nubs. And they have good tires...

14" wheels? On a wagon? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Incidentally, I found a company that can make 16" steelies that look exactly like cop rims and will accept the dog dish hubcaps.

        Only problem is, they're $155 a wheel+shipping.

LOL, yeah the 14 inchers would be a bit small, but I got 'em already so that means they are free! I need to use those tires that are on 'em anyway. If it helps, the back tires would be P225/75-R14's so they are pretty tall.

For $155 a wheel, I'd just buy me some 17in Mustang wheels.

Hey, a nice set of 14's with the right tires could be pretty cool. I'm considering that as one option for summer tires for the LTD since it came with 14's, but tire selection seems to be pretty limited. For example, the Tire Rack doesn't list any 225/75/14 tires at all, and the only 215/75/14 is the Kumho Touring A/S (luckily available in whitewall) or a trailer-only Goodyear Marathon. Trouble is, I've lived with a set of BFG Touring T/As and given the way I wore out a set of 255/60/15 Radial T/As, I'm not sure a standard-touring tire would be a smart way to spend my money.

Yeah, I don't think they make the 225/75-14's anymore. I got these at a flea market for $10 . From my experience the BFG radial T/A's don't last very long at all. I don't think I'll get 25K out of them.

If you want '90-'97 style dishes you NEED wheels off a '90-'97! Beware, they are bigger diameter than the old ones. 10 somethin inches vs 11 somethin.

My BFG T/A's lasted for quite a few years, being melted daily on asphalt.

85mercpark is running different wheels now, 15's IIRC

Get some 16" steelies and use the tall caps. They look good.
