    255 tips?

anyone know what i can do with a 255?.. im starting to develope a thing for power.. but i have 0 cash to work with..

    what i have

    stock 255.
previous owner ditched the CFI for a 2bbl bronco carb. would this have resulted in him changing the intake? if so, what are my carb options with the intake he used?

i have zero exhaust restriction, straight piped from the manifolds into thrush glasspacks 5.0 H/O OEM mustang headers are coming.

    is an H pipe recommended?

and a big question.. will a 302 intake fit on this engine? ive read that it doesnt

There isent much you can do with these engines. I would recomment putting your efforts into a roller 302 with some cheap factory goodies(will be better and cheaper in long run). Then, ditch the turd 255. Im sure for your car, the guy swapped just the carb and ignition system over.

yea.. i dont know TOO much about engines.. i got my headers comin, might rebuild the carb. i just feel like doing some bolt ons until i swap the engine. thinking bout making a DIY cold air intake il take that advice though.. def not gonna get real serious

dont worry my friend.. a 302 is in her future

Stuff like headers is a good idea, because you can swap them to a 302. I belive they are the same between the 255-302. get your self a mustang H-pipe and some decent flowing mufflers. What carb is on it? Good ol' ford/motorcraft 2bbl?

and yea i believe it is a fomoco 2bbl.. i think he said it was a refurb but its for a bronco. thats all i know

If your going with headers, you will need the H-pipe. Plus, having single exhaust an headers, is like having a spinkler at the end of a fire hose lol. All this stuff is affordable. What are your laws for emissions?

i can run open headers if i wanted. lol.. withthe headers, what will the H pipe do? i planned originally on running legit duals anyway, but without an H

Dual exhaust with no H-pipe? Logic is flawed lol. Using an H-pipe is the only way to have ligit duals. Running a true dual exhaust increases your engines ability to breathe. In your case, you could run an "off-road h-pipe", which has no cats. Its the only thing that will bolt up to your headers. The flange of your stock down pipes will be too small and wont fit. Moral of the story, replace manifolds with headers, you have to be ready to do the rest of the exhaust too. Other than that, you only need one more muffler and a driver side tail pipe to finnish off the sytem.

ok.. my fault again.. didnt explain myself properly.. im currently using my stock downpipes that i cut off right before the cats. then just extended each side literally into 2 separate straight pipes. my intentions were to use my downpipes i cut off the cats and weld the straight sections in (instead of my current clamps) and poblt them back up to the headers

The 302 intake will physically bolt to the heads, because it's basically the same block. Unfortunately the 255 heads have oval intake ports, not square like the 302, so it's not gonna work out.

People say the 255 is shit which for the most part is true, they were a band-aid stop gap smog motor until Ford could build a proper emissions engine, but then again I've never actually seen anyone do anything with them besides bash them. Most people haven't even see one in person, yet talk nothing but trash about them. I'd like to find one and see what I could do with it. Not easy to find though.

well i got one. in the event i sell it, ill put it up on the forum. ive looked around and rebuilding them is not easy task.. alot of physical labor and/or machining needs done to make them really even worthy or AM parts.. they have something like a 4" strok but TINY pistons. (so ive read) even making these a 289 is aparently difficult, and the few ive heard about being made into 302s makes the walls really thin. im not gonna dis my motor.. shes got 148k on stock parts doesnt burn oil doesnt leak and i get 18+ mpg.. but its by no means anywhere near a powerhouse.

Any aftermarket header will not bolt up to you stock down pipes. You would need to have the flange changed on your down pipes in order for your headers to bolt up to them. Most just through on a used mustang H pipe to complete the install.
