does the orientation of the coolant hoses for the egr spacer matter? Or can I just plug them in to either port?

I don't think it matters in the grand scheme of things, but I understand that for full fill and air purge, inlet should be on the bottom and outlet on the top. The one going to the heater line should be the top one IIRC. The one coming from the head should be the lower one. You could also just bypass it altogether by running the hose directly from the head to the heater hose.
