    Bottom end work

How much should it cost me to do this....

    bore out cylinders .030" over
put in new pistons and rings(I provide)
    put in new bearings

my mechanic told me it should cost 400 bucks, is that about right?

I don't really know. I've never done that before. But I don't think i'd pay that much.

I called up the local machine shop and they said 800 bucks! WTF?
they must have thought that I needed a new crankshaft and connecting rods...those alone are about 400 bucks.

depends on what they want to charge you for assembly.

Bore 30 over, R&R rods, resize rods big end, ARP rod bolts, hone cylinders, pollish crank, rod & crank bearings, pistons, rings, ballance, new head bolts, oil pump. Runs around 1200$ or less. There is the hillbilly rebuild but depends on your cylinder wall condition.

I also have a hillbilly rebuilt long block in one of my Vics that I would let you have for 500 as a short block.

If you can deal with hyperuetetics pistons then the 5.0 shortblocks can be had brand new from ford for around 1200..
