when i bought my 88 vic about 3 months ago, i noticed a rather quiet noise developing underneath my rear driver-side wheel well.. i just had exhaust put on, and as soon as i got it back i noticed the sound has gotten worse (it wasn't the first thing i noticed, my new kick-ass flowmaster super 40's stole the show).. i figured the new exhaust would drown out the sound coming from my rear end (hehe).. but it didn't.. the sound is worse now.. i've asked around and the only thing i can come up with is a vacuum leak of some sort. it's not a loud noise, unless you are at the rear of the car, but it must be pretty serious if i can hear it as well as my exhaust. my car hesitates and surges a lot, not so much with the new exhuast, but maybe this has something to do with it? the smog pump and a/c removal is next for that, but any ideas on what the annoying noise under my wheel well is? granted, my undercarriage is a little dirty (hehe).. i see no lines of any sort which may be a vacuum line.. can someone please tell me what the hell is wrong with my car now?

Fuel pump maybe. Its really the only thing back there, unless maybe you have the auto level suspension and the lines are cut, tho the compressor is up front on the driver's side frame rail just behind the radiator. You'd hear it running if that were the case, and it would have burned out long before now if it was trying to run all the time.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

great.. is the fuel pump inside the gas tank or outside? and are they all a little noisey or is mine starting to go out? a buddy would give me his entire 89 grand marq for nothing, i just have to tow it here, but guess what, the fuel pump is out of it.... pricey to change? can i do it myself with the bare necessities as far as tools?

In the fuel tank. They're all kinda noisy, the last one I knew of that was starting to go bad was actually really quiet. No idea if noise level is related to how much life the pump has in it tho, but mine is at 150k and working fine. The fuel pump is like $70 or something, not really expensive. You need to drop the fuel tank, and remove the fuel pump sending unit. Mostly hand tools, ratchet, sockets, extensions, and similar. Nothing really fancy tho if your fuel tank is not in very good shape, you may wish to consider replacing it with a new one before putting it all back in. Its not really a bad job tho, the fuel smell is the worst of it honestly.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Oh, and when you do it, it'd be a good idea to have <1/4 tank of gas. The tank is lighter that way and it wont spill all over the place.Nick
