    Errr.....

Ok, i know if it's not one thing it's another with old vic's.... But.

Today i was going to go back to my local parts store to try and get another drain plug for my oil pan.

Well the god demn thing started that popin shit agine. so i turned around and parked her takeing each plug loose and puting them back on. got back in and that shit kept on.....

    Got to my parts store.

Now i know i been leaking oil preety bad actualy. but acording to my stick it takes up to 6 qt's of oil why i dont know. Scott told me that my Stick prob is wrong so i checked it before i left and it looked about a half a quart low. Which means it had 5 1/2 qt's in it.

Any way when i poped my hood at the parts store it was so god demn hot i coldent even touch the oil stick..... Over heated ... made sure my Belt was still on and it was. I didnt over rev or anything just that god demn poping.....

So i went in the store to find out the owner left about 5 min's ago. So i was screwed on the drain plug. and i bought a qt of oil. put the oil in the car and walla no more poping. whille i was putting the oil in though it was actaully smokin?.?.?

So my question is what coulda cased it to over heat? was it the oil? Do i need to look for something else? I know my radiator is good. fan blows good.

And if it is the oil, why do i need 6 qt's instead of 5... Any how. if anyone can make any sence of this id be really happy.

    Thanks Mangs!

sounds fishy, we had a work truck that always smoked when you pulled the dipstick when hot, but it was just a pos, so i dont know, oil pump mabye?, some sort of special option oil system?, as for overheating, thermostat?hoses collapsing?

how many quarts do you put in for an oil change? you could have the wrong dipstick.

Running lean can also make the engine hotter... have you checked the fuelpressure?

Nope. im afriade to wire anything at this time on my car due to bad wiring im trying to get fixed done by the last owner :-/ Dipstick thing is what scott was telling me. But that dern poping thing has got me thinking twice. as soon as i put another qt. of oil in here the poping went away and so did the over heating.

Umm for it to be full i put 5 qt oil one qt lucus..

And for hose's no other oil leak besides the oil plug is in sight. o and the valv cover gaskets.

It's just got me going wtf... this makes no sence...

        Thanks guys.

They take 5 quarts. The dipsticks on many 80s Fords were screwed up. Mine reads a quart over full when it has 5 in it. The dipstick tube might also not be fully seated into the block. Next time you change the oil, drain it all out, put 5 quarts in, start the motor for a minute to filll the filter up, then pull the dipstick and file a mark into it where it reads full. Use that as your guideline.

Running warm does not equate to overheating. A mechanical water temp guage is cheap. Invest in one. You can't troubleshoot without all of the information.

I wish you were closer to Mobile, I'd be glad to help out. Seems like you're about 4 hours away though. Do you ever make it down this way?

Long shot here...But I wonder if the timing chain is dead....They had plastic gears on the older cars.

Smoke or steam out of a hot(not overheating) engine is normal.

i was wondering if the popping sound could actually be chain slap. i know with my car it runs like a raped ape, but as soon as i put 91 octane in it, you beter wait for the car. it spits and sputters. it hates the higher octane. i put it in there once to just help clean out some deposits and it spit and sputtered. my white 87 started popping and i have a way of where i just know whats wrong w/ my cars. it was plugs and wires.

Jumbo man i aprecate it man, My LadyFriend is from down there, but i havent never been down that way. But i big time thank you for the invite

Mr Ltd Humm, like i said im not a big Engine man. just the basic's how might i tell if the chain is good or bad? Without takeing evreything off? And the overheating light never did come on, it just got really really hot rather quickly.

And 87 crown vic. Can i ask what chain slap is? When i first got the car i used 91 in it to try and clean it as well. along with a fuel treatment. Butive been tru a bunch of tanks of fuel since then on reg.

Any how thanks guys for all the advise.

chain slap is a knocking/slapping noise from the front of the engine. it is caused by a stretched timing chain hitting the cover. surprised nobody else said this. if you ever change a water pump, i recommende changing the timing chain and gears since you already are gonna have the front of the engine apart. that way if it goes you dont have to think to yourself....man i should have taken care of that when i had it apart the first time.
