    oil magically dissappearing??

I was driving today and the low oil light came on (above the headlight switch) and I added a quart and it went off. Checked the oil and it seemed full though before I added the quart.... She's running perfectly absolutely no smoke out the pipes and no smells and no leaks in the engine compartment or on the ground. Any ideas?

heat does not signifiganlty affect the oil level, certainly not by a quart. transmission fluid, yes.

Uhh, I have checked my oil when the cars were hot before, yes it makes a big difference. The oil is always way up the dipstick. Esp after just shutting it down. Have to wait for it to get back into the pan.

what you are observing is the oil taking a while to dribble back into the pan.

The transmission dipstick has hot and cold marks, becuase heat affects its level. the power steering fluid dipstick has hot and cold marks, becuase heat affects its level. the coolant overflow... well you get the point.

The oil dipstick does NOT have hot and cold marks becuase..... :p

Change your oil, put 5 quarts in, and see where it reads on the dipstick. Mine isn't correct, and 5 quarts puts me about 1/2 quart over full. Yours might be off too. This dipsick came from some random station wagon in the junkyard, and has a mark filed into it for full, so apparently it wasn't correct for the previous owner either.

I have 2 89 T/Cs. One with only 90k miles on it burns no oil whatsoever. The other, my day to day car, has 227k miles on it and it burns a quart every 1500 miles. It burns more in the summer. I have read about changing the oil every 2k miles in these cars and it does make sense; but, I wait until 3k, after adding 1 quart along the way. I have read that adding oil is not a good idea; thus the change at 2k. This would be economical if you did the change yourself. Otherwise, I have gone a very, very long time with the 3k mile interval and adding the quart. Good luck.
