You got several options since it depends if you want to go carbed or go with sefi and the emissions standards in your county.

Standard 5.0 HO motors from 87-93 stangs bolt right up in a panther with little work. You have to reverse the accessories and the upper intake from what I've heard, and many people have done it on here. You also need a mustang ecm, which are dirt cheap also.

A 351W is a good choice also, plenty of them are found in older ford trucks, vans, police interceptor models, etc. Most used the factory VV carb with the exception of some trucks and vans, plus if emission standards aren't tough you can do alot to a 351w.

A GT40 motor from a late model ford explorer (95-99?), its probably the best 302 you can buy on a budget that will get you 300 hp or close to it. Prices vary on condition & the place, some can be had for as low as $500-600 or as high as $2000.

Another option you could do is to rebuild your lopo, but to HO specs. Swap in a set of e7 or GT40 heads, HO or Explorer cam, 1.7 roller rockers, HO intakes, and HO injectors. These parts can be found cheap on corral.net or ebay, but GT40 stuff is more expensive and harder to find. If it needs a full rebuild, swap in standard HO forged pistons or a better equivalent.

There's alot of options and I only know so much from a friend that did an engine swap with his 88 Grand Marquis. He swapped in a decent HO motor from a wrecked 93 stang, it was cheap and easy to do for him. It passed PA emissions with ported e7s with no problem on a 96,000 mile motor.

I would make a set budget first, the little things in an engine swap usually add up quickly when your in the middle of it. Shop around for the best deals also and don't overpay on a used motor, unless it has exceptionally low mileage.

300 ponies for under a grand including purchase price is not going to be the easiest thing to do. What are you working with now? If the engine isn't totally fubar in your car, you shoulld be rebuild the shortblock, add a decent cam and heads and a stock mustang 4bbl intake and roll with it. It might not make super power, but there is no reason you can't make it a strong runner without blowing your wad on expensive stuff. Another alternative is just a junkyard HO with a stock iron 4bbl intake. Again, not a super powerhouse but cheap and effective. I'm with 87mefull on this, you need to establish a budget, and what you have to work with currently. Maybe some of the stuff you currently have can be recycled into a new powerplant.

that is a tight budget.......cost me more than a grand to do my motor swap.......dont forget all the little shit that adds up like belts, hoses, tune up parts, motor mounts, gaskets, oil, antifreeze, you need a 4bbl carb, a 4 bbl intake............start buying stuff a few parts at a time, look for a low mile ho shortblock (got mine for 150 bucks).......thumper heads are a good choice, theres a guy on here that is doing cnc porting also ............that will put you at the marks u want with the right cam.

good luck. the only way I was able to get a inexpensive HO conversion was to work off or trade for all the parts...and that was just for a stock HO. If you know some people in the mustang crowd, that's the best place to start looking.

No accessory changes are needed, keep all the vic stuff. Since you will be going carb, that simplifies it a bit, and keeps the cost down a bit. Although a good intake and carb will easily set you back 600 bucks.

Stock mustang headers will NOT fit on gt40p heads. The sparkplug angle was changed.
