    Motor differences

I've heard 351 motors being called Windsors and Clevelend engines. Is there a difference, or are they just names?

When answering this question, keep in mind that I am extremly ignorant when it comes to mechanics, and spelling.

There is a 351 Windsor, and a 351 Cleveland. They have the same displacement (351 cubic inches) but the Windsor is a small block and the Cleveland is a big block. They are diffrently designed blocks. Nothing really bolts up between the two.

Because they're basically only good for a truck motor. Can't really do much for them.

The 351W and 351C heads will swap right out, but the coolant passages need to be modified, as well as using the proper intake for the heads.
The 351M is a 351C with the heads from a 400 (if I remember correctly).

I'm sure Mercracer can clear that up. He knows too much for his own good.

351M's aint bad motors, but they are riddled with the low compression and other emissions garbage.

The heads on them are close to 351C 2V heads, but they are on a high deckheight block IIRC...

351W is the "Windsor", which shares a few attributes with a regular 302, just has a taller deckheight. Same bellhousing, same motor mounts.

351C also uses the same bell and motor mounts, but the heads are totally different. The 351C and 351M use a dry intake manifold, the waterneck doesnt go thru the intake (unlike the 351W)

351M is the bastard child, using a big block bellhousing, and motor mounts.

And, to throw another wrench into the mix, there are two 351C engines. The 2v and the 4v. Block is the same, different heads/intake.

The 351C is the only Ford engine to use different casting heads for the 2V and 4V motors. The intake ports and valve sizes are the most significant differences. The 4V heads started out with a quench chamber from '70-71. In mid production year, the 4V heads got the open chamber which the 2V heads had from the start. In 1974, the Torino/Montego 351C 4V motors had a head with 4V ports and 2V valve sizes. Australian 351 Cleveland and 302 "Cleveland" engines got closed chamber 2V heads. 351M/400 heads are nearly identical to Cleveland 2V heads except for a slightly larger chamber.
The 351C is not only a small block, but it has a shorter deck than the 351W. The 351M and 400 motors are taller decked versions of the 351C just as the 351W is a taller decked version of a 302.
Motor mounts, bellhousing and flywheel are the only parts which are shared between the early 302, 351W and 351C motors. Oil pans, distributors and accy brackets are definitely different.
Many people call 351M and 400 motors "Clevelands" and many of those people do not know the difference between these motors and a 351C.
