The install is easy the signal comes from the negative wire on the coil which in most cases in green. And yes i ran my wire on the side below the brake booster. You can get thru there easy just get ur self a fish tape and if you dont a one of those around use a wire coat hanger. Then you hook it too +12v which is ignition it will have +12 v when you turn the car on and 0 volts when the car is off, and your ground and 12 for the light on the tach. You can snag this from the ash tray lighting..

Grommet under the booster. Mine is an old SunPro mini tach strapped to the steering column. I had it laying around from my Beetle.

mine is an i dunno what the name is multi color changing led tach from advance auto, ran the wires through a grommet in the firewall near the brake booster, attached to the dash using existing dash pad hold down screw...
and to those wondering, the original headlight switch shown is a dummy knob filling the hole, the switch crapped out, so now the left toggle is parkin lights, the right is low beam, the blue rocker next to it is high beam(that switch shit itself too, column lever is just there for wipers and blinkers now), and the round blue toggle is the fog lights, all to be replace with custom switch panel soon....

and the thin black wire you see here isnt for the tach, it goes to the temp sensor for a thermometer/clock that was in the car when i bought it..
