Yup. you get more velocity out of the 4bbl in cruise mode because you're operating with a smaller venturi. Thats the idea of the VV carb, adjust the venturi size to maintain optimal intake air velocity at all times, but it didn't quite work out so well. Thats why I personally like spread bore carbs so much, small primaries so it runs really nice at cruising speeds, but bigass secondaries for lots of WOT flow capability.

o.k. the car is an '84 but it has less than 100,000 on it would the o2 sensor really be all that f**ed up or the cats for that matter? i've already done the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, timing(haven't done the chain replacement),and ran a realy good fuel cleaner through it. do you think that the really low geared rear end could be robbing me? and if so what gears would you recomend?

A really low gearset would be the 4.10, with your tow package you probably have 3.55 which seems to be one of the most suitable all-around driving. 3.08 should give you better economy while cruising down the interstate, but in town the engine will have to work harder to get that landyacht going - not good for mileage, unless you don't mind driving grandpa-style accelerating like a freight train. Also IIRC oxygen sensors have like 60-70,000 miles of life, after which they should be replaced.

            Dear Gurus,

I've an '89 Colony Park Wagon on a Lincoln hearse frame. On most road trips, I haul 500 pounds. Longer trips with a codriver 6-700.

My rebuilt to Nascar specs engine, CFI, new plugs, wires, cap, timing and 3.08 (positraction) rear end on long (20-24hr) Interstate trips, 5mph over the limit, cruise control, OD except for D pulling hills gets 21 -23 mpg. I intend to add dual exhausts to increase the mileage slightly.

Fully loaded, the car will get up and go on entry ramps.

As a young man I liked to drive fast and leave long rubber marks on inoffensive pavement, Now I'm a grandpa, I'd rather stop less often for gas.
