Any ideas what the problem could be? (I had an Optima "red top" battery and an 3G alternator installed a few months ago). Once it has run for a few minutes and is turned off, it starts right up. Any ideas?

Try turning the key to 'on' for a few seconds before you try and crank to let the fuel pressure build up. Might want to try doing it twice if the system is bleeding down. When was the last time it had a tuneup? Might just be in need of a set of plugs, or the fuel filter could be plugged.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

plugs and fuel filter, mine used to do the same crap, when i put in a new pump, flushed the tank out while i was there(it was out of the car anyways...) i was pissed cause it still acted weird, changed the filter and all was well, apparently it had sucked up some shiznazz which blocked it up, hence why i flushed the tank outjay--1983 towncar, 302v8 cfi, dual straight pipes w/resonators ,edelbrock motor goodies, custom interior, full custom stereo system, full rebuilt trunk audio setup, custom paint...more to come......

I always like to turn them upside down just to make sure some garbage comes out so I know I didn't waste my time changing a filter that didn't need it.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Good idea, but I'd like to change my filter because I don't know how often the previous owner changed it. The fuel pump whines louder than I'd like it to whine. My old '89 TC had a "sound deadening, padded" trunk compared to my '90 GM's cheap trunk mat.

I changed the fuel filter. Gadget73, you were correct about all the stuff inside in the filter, it was nasty!!! I'm glad I did replace it, but the car doesn't start as "crisp" as it use to start. I'll do the plugs, wires and cap and rotor next.
