    Help - Odometer Stopped

    Hi All,

Well, it finally happened: the odometer froze at 156,500 miles.

I took the instrument cluster apart to the point where I pulled off the fuel gauge face and saw a black plastic gear connected to a black rubber worm gear. The worm gear connected to the odometer number rollers.

The plastic gear had teeth missing.

I see for sale low-mileage instrument clusters for 89-93 Mustangs and F-350 trucks for reasonable prices. (Much cheaper than 2 gears from Speedometer Plus).

I'm thinking of buying one and replacing both gears.
Anything i should be aware of before trying this?
Will they fit on my 91 Marquis?

I'm very concerned because i read somewhere that the 91 Marquis had a small electric motor which turned the number rollers and worm gear.

    Help please.

    Thanks,
    91gmblack

My 91' had a dead odometer and I replaced it with one from a 93' car. Any mercury speedometer from 90-94 will work, or any crown vic from 90-91. You can steal the gears from the other cluster or just replace the entire thing. Should cost you anywhere between free and $25.

Note: If you use a 92-94 Mercury cluster, reuse the 'film' on the back from your 91' so all of the connections with the wiring harness are correct.

One thing you should be aware of is that junkyard speedo gears will eventually fail also... The get brittle with age, and break and crumble... The aftermarket ones are made out of "Delron" or something like that, and don't dry out and crumble like the original ones.... So even if they are a little expensive... they are worth the extra money, NOT to have to go back in and replace them again!

There was a speedo shop in New Orleans that had brass ones... and all you did was put some lubri-plate on them, and they would never wear out... but I have not been able to get a hold of the owner since Katrina... His shop survived, (looked it up on Google maps, with the satillite overlay picture... no flooding in the area of his shop...) as it was across the river, but he has not answered the phone.. so I wonder if it is because he had to move out of his house, and have not had a chance to re open.... Anyway, I need a set, as soon as I get a hold of him and find out his status, i'll post it....
