oil pressure question(dont think its been posted yet)

ok so on my 87 gt stang because of speed density and huge cam and heads i get the funny surge idle, now my question comes in when my idle drops to about 800 or so my pressure gauge drops completely and when it idles back up the gauge comes up to normal when i drive it stays normal. i can hear the gauge click on and off....is it just the gauge or is it my oil pump actually turning on and off??? when the gauge torun off it only stays off for a second then turns back on!

The oil pressure gauges are very inaccurate. In fact I think it's really just an on/off switch. Your oil pump cannot just turn on and off. It's mechanically driven by a rod off the cam and distributor.

If its not floating up and down with engine speed, its not a real guage. Someone may have installed an idiot light sender in place of the correct guage sender making it go from 0 to normal instead of showing a useful value. If it idles really low it might have low oil pressure. Hook up a real guage and see what its doing.

The IAC spacer/idle adjusting plate would help that surging idle...
