erick here and im new here so bare with me, lol, im rebuilding my rear end on my '87 ltd cv. going from stock gears to 3.55's and acquired a posi unit. posi is in and when trying to fit the ring into the housing it quite didnt go all the way in. why is that? not a match? or does it go in with some excessive force? second, the pinion nut was a bi@tch to remove but i got it out, but with no success i couldnt get the pinion out. so how exactly does the whole pinion come out from the axle itself? do i need a special tool/s to get that sucker out and then back in? might seem like im stupid but i wanna get this done right lol, so thanx to any of you guys that help me out.

welcome to gmn!
you need a soft faced hammer to remove and install the ring gear to the carrier
to remove the pinion from the housing, install the nut and tap the pinion out of the housing
you should get a new pinion seal,a crush collar, and a new pinion nut........i usually replace the pinion and carrier bearings and races also......i get a kit on ebay, usually around $60 shipped.....the users name is pedstang
when reinstalling the pinion bearing on the new pinion, dont forget the pinion shim under the bearing......that needs to be swapped over.........do you have an inpact gun? you will need one to reinstall the pinion, and a piece of steel with twoholes cut into it for the driveshaft flange bolts.......you need to tighten the nut enough to crush the crush collar and get the proper preload
preload on the pinion nut (resistance turning the nut with a inch lb tourqe wrench) is 25 in lbs

crap, i guess imma have to go get myself a impact gun and a torque wrench. i know i know, what kind of a guy doesnt already have this? well me, lol. thanx alot for the help, this will eventually lead me on the path do getting it right. another question i had, since i could get the 3.55's in, i left the stock gears on the posi unit and put everything back cuz i needed it back in service the next day. after i finished i did a lil burnout but yet again the right rear wheel was the only one spinning, i expected the left rear to be spinnin as well but as i did it in some dirt around the streets or in some wet pavement, the left rear spun along with the right rear. does this mean i have to rebuild the bearings, shims, etc in the carrier? or what is the problem with that? i dont have a locker like most of you guys, but its a, i believe a posi from a stang or f-150. it was a gift thats why. what do you think....

Luckily mine doesn't need a gear change, just a trac-lock overhaul and new bearings. Will get done when I do rear disc brakes since the axles have to come out anyway.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
