Once I actually get some oil into the compressor it will quiet down I'm sure.

Mine was always loud because one of the bolt holes in the compressor is stripped and it vibrates in the bracket. I think I'm going to cheat and just drill out the ear on the compressor a bit and run a longer bolt with a nut behind it to fasten it down.

AOD, do you still have that belt routing setup? I had my car exactly the same way, and yesterday I noticed that when the compressor is working the belt is slapping like an inch, the lower portion of the belt that is. Checked tension nd it was good, still it was jumping all over the place. Today after work I finally got pissed at it and moved the tensioner to the lower side, compressor runs smoother now and the belt doesn't jump one bit! Check yours for that stuff, nasty-vibrating belt isn't something you want there.

Gadget, the compressor's ear that the tensioner pivot bolt goes through is not only stripped, but chipped off, the longer bolt + nut with a massive hat solved the problem nicely.

Yeah, my belt is still routed like above, which comes around the top of the compressor, under the tensioner and to the crank pulley. You push down on the tensioner to tighten it.

My belt was sloppy too at first, but it was new so I had to adjust it again. I'm still having issues with a squealing belt, but I think it's the cheapo $10 steering side belt I bought. Need to get something else...

Hi. I am a newbi ( not from the USA) and just got rid of the smog pump. Where I live only Motorcraft parts are available. Can you give me the Motorcraft equivalent of the Dayco 5060560 ?
            Thanks

Holy thread resurrection Batmang! :jawdrop: :p

The Dayco part number mentioned is a 56.0" six-rib serpentine-style belt.

Dunno about Motorcraft belts, but the Goodyear equivalent PN is 4060560:

Do your local parts depots require an exact part number?

Motorcraft doesn't make an equivelent as far as I know, no Ford product ever used one factory.

Try Gates K050560 or AcDelco 6K650. If it helps, some original applications were a '96-'97 Plymouth Voyager with the 2.4L and 3/4 and 1-ton Chevy/GMC trucks from 1986-1989 with the 454.

How'd you figure that out about the minivans and Chevy trucks?

Oh,OK. By serpentine do you mean that one belt takes care of all pulleys from AC - to - Alternator? Then that's not for me cause my car uses one belt for the alternator and water pump and another for the AC-Smog.

No Not really. If I cant get the car to town then its mostly a guess-itmate- try 3 or 4 parts till one fits. Thats what I am about to do today.Otherwise the only option will be to get a working smog pump from a junked car and then connect up with the normal belt.

Right, that's how all our '79-'91 Panthers are. Took me a while to figure out that apparently "serpentine belt" is how parts goons refer to any flat ribbed belt (regardless of routing) to differentiate from the older "V" belt, which has a V-shaped cross section. Got a couple counterpeople to give me pretty dirty looks when I asked for a V belt for a pulley with five ridges. :p

Good luck belt shopping! With any luck the 56" six-rib will be spot on to start.

I got some vague memories about a 2.3 Mazda listed as an application, but that may have been for the other belt, the one that ran only the smog pump and not the A/C.

Just saw an old Crown Victoria LTD in the Hospital parking lot and went out to talk to the owner. The engine compartment is exactly as it is in my 1988 CP ! And no air pump ! The belt he is using had 'ACDelco 6K650' on it, from AC pulley to main passing under the tensioner. He said he got the belt in town.Guess I am in luck.

Good catch, I meant 6K560. Hopefully my typo doesn't cause you any problems, gopiqpp.

I usually get the applications from partsamerica.com (find a part, click on the details, and sometimes it will give you the option of viewing other applications). Rock Auto also list applications, but not with their specific motors.

How did you jump the A/C to make it turn? Mine died over the winter, it was still using the R-12. One of the hoses has a hole, so I guess I'll have to go to 134.

Do not power the compressor if there is no charge in the system. It won't circulate the oil and you can fry the compressor.
