is this possible? my oil pressure gauge i just installed says around 55psi when its cold and 50 - 55 when fully warmed up. Just wondering if maybe the gauge is screwy.

That's great oil pressure hot. Does anyone have a service manual handy? I though they called for ~40 psi warm on these cars? But I recall some engines had 50psi hot at idle, so it must be okay. What weight oil are you running? It's probably drawing a small amount of extra horsepower, but I'd always rather have too much oil pressure than not enough. If the gauge was off, I would think it would read higher cold.
In my dad's '51 Ford, the oil pressure relief valve was sticking and causing oil pressure to build up before we rebuilt it. The gauge went to 100psi, and it would peg going down the road. No ill effects, however, in the years is was driven like that (it was probably driven 5000 miles or so in those last years before the rebuild).1990 Country Squire - under restoration

My 91 marq would flicker on the highway, with 20/50 in it. I drove it for 3 months then decided to swap another motor into it.
I drove te other car with the autometer gauge that read 0 for a long time. I grenaded the trans first. I haven't actually blown a 302/5.0 yet...Builder/Owner of Badass Panther Wagons

I think spec is something like 8psi or greater at idle. Anything beyond that is just a bonus. That motor must be really tight. Mine when it was brand new and had no miles on it would idle 30 psi hot. Its now in the 20-25 range where its been since I got to about the 3,000 mile point. My motor is in spec, but barely. Its as loose as permissable by the book.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
