    Idle Question??

on this gt i just bought it tends to idle up and down 200 or 300 rpm, most of the time but sometimes it idles smooth. i thought maybe the timing was off so i tried both advancing and retarding it a bit. i got it to idle a lot smoother but it was idling at about 1700 when i did and it seemed to lose a lot of low end power.
i have talked to 2 guys that have 87's and both of them said theres also did that. one was stock and the other slightly modded. Any ideas on why they do this and how i can fix it?? also forgot to mention that it has a .560 lift cam in it, but its not acting like its the cam changing the way its idling!!

What year GT is this? 86-88 have speed density, and 89+ have mass air so its a little different. What fixed the idle surge junk on my car was replacing the bad vacuum lines, the coolant temp sensor, and cleaning the idle control motor. If you have mass air, you might also want to clean the mass air sensor. Could also be the cam making it do that especially if its speed density. SD has to use a cam designed to work with it otherwise the computer needs to be reprogrammed.

Speed density, and a huge cam.

      Get used to it.

well its an 87 it does have speed density, and i guess i can check the coolant temp sensor, i do only have a single core radiator, and it definetly runs hot
could that make a difference?? it doesnt seem to have the cam lope its more of an up down idle!!Maybe it doesnt have a long duration im not too sure. Also it has the stock 5.0 intake if i run like a gt 40 intake could that change it???

dont mind me if i sound Retarded i have been drinking for a while!!!!

It is idling that way because a bigger cam will affect vacuum, which in turn affects the way the ECM handles things... This is why your car does funny things to compensate for this.

A GT-40 intake would def improve the power, but you'd have the same problem. You could convert to mass air, but thats up to you.

What is it with mustangs in the dorm parking lot and cooling problems? lol...

well part of the reason is ppl always put huge motors in thier cars and leave the stock radiator in it!!!! So can i do anything to at least stop it from idling and stalling???
and what is it with ur site not responding to picture uploads????

my stock '87 tc has occasional idle problems when i run it up to temp then shut it off for a couple minutes before i restart it. it drops real low, then hops up slightly too high until i give it a couple easy revs or just start driving. im sure gmgt is right, the big came will kill your idle vacume and your low end, especially if it has a long duration
