    Ford sells a GT40 5.8 intake, and the 93-95 lightnings ran them...And um, the old SN95 cobra R ran a 351W....

For EFI 351, you'd need hood modifications.
I'd say to go carbed 351, since you're already almost carbed. Just go with it. If, in the future, you want to run the EFI conversion, do it on the 351.

a 351 intake is wider than a 302. The Explorer intake is very comparable to an actual GT-40 Cobra intake. Doesn't look as cool and perhaps has marginal flow differences but for the price difference its worth the maybe 1 hp you'll give up with it.

You could run a gt40 style lower and a box upper and keep the stock hood. That type of intake would hurt the bottom end torque a bit though.

That townie looked pretty awesome by the time he was done with it, I have a nice high res picture of it with a custom hood and a nice set of mags.

Lots of trucks had 351w engines, some police trim Crown Vics, just search around. They're out there. I'll say a truck is your best bet tho. If you want simple, you're probably looking at a carb swap, but thats pretty much a given since 83 is the evil EEC III CFI. Carb swaps have been documented on here, check the 5.0/5.8 archive.

My worst enemies are those who presume me to be harmless. They cannot imagine how much I resent and disdain them, or just how great a threat they would face if I could get at them. Everything in their behavior speaks of insult and presumptuousness, and for now it is all I can do to make constructive use of my anger toward them. At this time, I just make a list of them and keep a watch on. Some day, with the help of time, space, and circumstance, I will be able to humiliate them properly - not in a manner they would enjoy, but in a style calculated to make them wish that they had never been born.

Both are good, but stock for stock, obviously the 351 will make more. An 5.0L HO is better than a 351 stock, that is fact. A 351 4 barrel HO is actually a bit less HP than a 5.0L EFI HO, but slightly more torque, keep in mind we are talking 10hp and 10 ft*lbs of difference here. There is more than that in variation from engine to engine. If you work from a 351, you will suck more gas, but can more cheaply make some nice HP and torque. If you work from a 302 EFI, you can make a nice hp and torque, and still retain the mileage, if not increase mileage.

Something to note is maybe going with an EFI conversion, yes it's harder but more rewarding I think. Scott as well as I have EFI motors and we both get good mileage. Scott has 230hp to the wheels, and still gets over 20mpg.
All things being EQUAL, the 351 will make much more low end torque and more power across the board. Comparing a 351 with crappy heads to a good HO 302 does not really tell the story

A stock EFI 5.0 Mustang motor will make some nice torque, but in reality the 302 wants to be a high winder due to the 3" stroke. If you throw much mods into the 302 this will move the torque peak up further and you will have not too much below 2K

If you get a stock 351, this can always be built up to a 408 or such later on and that will have some NICE torque!!!
