My mechanic went through a number of head combinations on the 347" engine, and the AFR's gave the best performance.

In fact, we were using the AFR 165's (1.90/1.60) up until the time a custom Curtis camshaft was installed. At that time the AFR 185's (2.02/1.60) were installed.

For any normal street vehicle (especially with an automatic) the 165's are more than you would ever need. They are made to produce good power from idle up to 6,000 RPM.

With the 185's the power doesn't really kick in until around 2,000 RPM, and they are good to over 6,500 RPM. The 185's are best in lightweight high reving vehicle/engine combinations that see most of their use in the 5,000 to 6,500 RPM range, and running a manual tranny. My '89 Stang with the AFR 185's only weighs 2,950 pounds, and it comes off the line at 6,000+ RPM.
