Here's my combo and I really like it, but I could see the low-end torque drop due to the lopo motor...

    Mustang headers (stock)
    (2) Hi-flo catalytic converters from Catco
    Custom H-pipe
    (2) 3-chamber mufflers from Flowmaster
2.5" piping to plumb it all

It exits just behind the rear wheels on both sides. It sounds fantastic, I don't need to worry about replacing/removing catalytic converters come inspection time. It's really quiet at idle and low speeds, but definitely opens up when I romp it.

I asked LOTS of questions before ending up on this exact set-up because I am a very respectable individual and I HATE people who drive around with loud exhaust systems late at night. This allows me to cruise through anywhere as late as I want without disturbing anyone while still "speaking my piece" when the time comes.

For you, though, I'd recommend 2.25" piping- most of the guys will likely agree... and I paid over $900 for my system, but you can get the Flowmasters and Catcos on eBay for MUCH cheaper than they charge at the shops.

That's what's cool about my part of New Hampshire. Nobody really cares about the noise level of your exhaust, except for the ricers. I see on average about 15 cars/trucks everyday with noisy exhausts. It's mainly trucks, and the cars I see usually have a leak in the exhaust, but again nobody seems to care.

Im planning on fixing my exhaust for emissions and performance purposes, and I live in Philadelphia, PA. Im going to run mustang shorty headers, a stock mustang h-pipe from an 89 GT, some proforce mufflers, s10 midpipes, and stock vic tailpipes. Its the cheapest setup for me that will see the most horsepower gain along with passing emissions.

You could probably find a catted mustang h-pipe from a 87-93 Mustang LX 5.0 or GT for cheap (got mine for $85 shipped) just for emissions purposes. Then just run the 87-93 offroad pipe for the rest of the year.

hmmm, ok, seeing that anykind of custom dual exhaust will lose low end torque which i want to keep. what about a single exhaust pipe like the stock one to an 80 series flowmaster with single in and dual out to 2 tips under the rear bumper? will that sound good and keep the low end torque i need?

Your best bet for torque is to run an h-pipe. When I ran straight pipes on my '90, you could kind of feel that there was a little loss of torque. Had I ran an h-pipe, it wouldn't have been like that.

so if i were to buy this and replace the mufflers with flowmasters i'll get a half decent sound and better power?

heres my setup: Stock mustang shorty headers, stock mustang H-pipe with smog tube sealed off and new cats, 2" dual piping from H-pipe out the back with flowmaster super 40's. It is a quiet exhaust, which is what I want because it is a Lincoln. Whenever I want it loud, I just unbolt the 4 bolts that hold the rear pipes to the h-pipe.

Nick, I run stock manifolds, no cats, dual glasspacks, an H-pipe, and side exits (in that order) on my Townie, flow-wise I think that setup is pretty close to just straight-piping your MGM. Compared to the stock single pipe with no other mods than the exhaust I believe the car now accelerates a little easier, which I'd contribute to the better flow. At idle and cruise you only hear a nice low rumble, but when you step on it you can definitely tell you have a V8 in front of you. Outside noise behaves in a similar manner - as long as I keep the RPMs down low it's all good, but try passing someone in a tunnel and all hell breaks loose. Just my 2 cents

If I had the money for it I'd go for that exhaust you show in the pic, with the only mods being two electric cut-outs (like Blaze's) installed somewhere along the H-pipe - it would be nice and quiet for the long highway runs, and loud as hell for cruising events and making ricers pissy

I run the same setup as Ivan.

                      However, mine is freakin loud.

If only I lived close, I could do something for ya...

You COULD run an H-pipe, flows and dumps (turndowns)...

thanks tom, ok if i switch to mustang shorty headers and put the h-pipe on can i do this to still be able to run the sidepipes and keep power?

will this setup work to run the sidepipes and still have the low end torque? there should be enough pipe and bends to keep the bacpressure there, i apologize for the crappy paint picture, lol

                              That would work...

It would also BE a lot of work..

for the sidepipes they have an installation kit that comes with u-bends and the necessary hardware to mount them, the only thing changing is adding a section of pipe to bring the sidepipes back to the front of the car, shouldn't be that bad once the headers and h-pipe is installed, hopefully anyway!
