Could it be the exhaust valve thingie? I'm thinking when it heats up that it could be flapping and making a banging sound? But even then I dont think it could make that loud of a noise.

dude, like i said, sounds like you have the same prob i had, it was a sticky lifter so i put in a can of winns engine tune, witch frees suck components, and its been good ever since.

If it's coming from inside the bellhousing it could be a cracked flexplate.

If the spring broke on that valve on the manifold it could let the valve and weight flap open and closed. Which would be causing the noise.

I 2nd the flexplate. My 76 Chevy pickup has a cracked flexplate. It sounds like a lifter going but it isn't. Check it in different gears. it is louder in drive then it is in park, but the noise on my truck is constaint and just louder depending on which gear it is in.

My k5 had a bent flywheel. Anything is possible. Id check the flexflate or flywheel whatever you call it.

Well, it turned out to be the starter. The starter gear kept flopping back and hitting the flywheel. I went down and got another starter and the noise is gone! While I was down there I found my front oil pan bolts were loose which might be why I have quite the oil leak on the front of the motor. So hopefully those are what was causing my oil leak.

Good, I'm glad it wasn't anything major.

Probably the bendix drive wasn't fully retracting and clattering on the ring gear.

The bendix was so loose. if you shook the starter the bendix would just go in and out.
