    The cable goes on the tailshaft on the drivers side, you can see the VSS in this pic. You remove the VSS/cable assy pull the circlip holding the gear in, remove gear, put in new one, put it back together.

        Go here for more instructions:

        You are probably wondering how hard may this job be. Do you have to drop the tranny? What would the correct speedo gear be? Well, for all you guys that are so curious and would like to change the gear yourself, here is a little help on how to install it. It's not hard at all. The speedo gear is...

              Speedo Gear Instal.

              For those of us considering a gear swap, please share your experience with the new gears (seat of the pants difference, and gas mileage).

              I'm still searching the posts trying to make the decision - 3.55 or 3.73. I'm going to wait until the new cam is installed, and then evaluate the torque vs. rpm curve before I make my decision, but I'm leaning towards a 3.73, but my conservative side screams 3.55!

                If you are not going to drag race alot, 3.55's are fine.

                  It's the "white" 23T speedo gear for AOD cars with 3.55:1 gears, correct?

                    No, the 23T is for a 3.73 or a 4.10/4.11 gear.

                      Depends on the transmission. It will be either the white 23 or the orange 20 for a 3.55. The difference is the number of splines on the tailshaft or something. 8 vs 7. Actually I think I might need to change mine again with the new tires, and different transmission. To get it accurate before, I ran a 23 tooth, but a quick calculation tells me I now need a 20 tooth.

                          DO NOT use a white, 23 tooth speedo gear in your automatic trans!!! it is for manual transmissions only.
                          the black, 23 took gear is the correct gear for an automatic trans.
                          As you can see, the snout on the black gear is much longer, typically a manual trans speedo gear with have a short snout and a auto trans gear will have a long snout. in the case of the black gear, the teeth are thicker too.

                          this is what happens when you use a white gear in an auto trans;

                              My current gear is an orange 21 tooth....I counted myself several times that it really was a 21 tooth.
