Can we sort this information out and make it fact? Can we list the "speedo gear to rear gear" conversion colors somewhere?
'90 AOD car with 3.55:1 gears and 27" tires. Do I need a short or long snout, white, black 23T speedo gear or something else?

what exactly did you miss ?
short nose gear are for manual transmissions, long nose gears are for automatic transmissions, THIS IS FACT.
The only factor in acuratley determining correct speedo gear is the which drive gear you have. in the case of an AOD, you could have a 7 or 8 tooth drive gear (this is machined on the output shaft). Assuming the transmission in your 1990 year model car is virgin (no one has replaced, repaired or rebuilt it) Most 1989 and newer passenger cars got an 8 tooth speedo drive gear.
there are several good online gear calculators, MrLTD has posted the link several times, there is also an equation you can use which is common knowledge and published in the FRPP catalog, it might be on the web page too.
Keep in mind, nothing is perfect. I have read the Factory says a 3-5% fast or slow reading error is acceptable. If you want it perfect, find a local speedometer shop and have them calibrate it.2003 Town Car Signature - 3.27 RAR, Dual exhaust and J-mod - SOLD 9/2011

The www.steeda.com website has a white 23T gear listed, no pics. Search under "speedometer gear". According to the replies here, their info is incorrect. Is the black, long snout 23T gear is correct speedo gear?

white gear is the short snout, for manual transmissions, black gear is the long snout for the automatic transmissions.
BTW... 23T speedo driven gears are typically for cars with a 3.73 final drive ratio. for a 3.55 gear, you probably need a 20 (orange) or 21 (purple) tooth driven gear, but you need to use the equation or on line calculator to know for sure.2003 Town Car Signature - 3.27 RAR, Dual exhaust and J-mod - SOLD 9/2011
