{Carbswap} Say good bye CFI!!!!

Day one of the 4bbl swap is done. I started kinda late on it today so I didnt get too much done on it. I pulled the gas tank and painted the one I am putting in and made the sump modification to it. I got to get a way of bolting the straps to the bottom brackets since it doesnt use the pin like in Blaze's archive and the straps from mine are rusted away. I took off a bunch of old fuel line and started removing the stuff from the motor to get at the cam. I got the radiator, a/c condensor, cfi body, alt, coil, egr, map sensor, those soleniods from the valve cover, and a bunch of hoses and wires.

Tomarrow I hope to get the tank in, run fuel line, put in the new cam, timing cover, fuel pump and maybe put on the manifold(Thanks again TommyN!). Depends on how cold it is tomarrow to how far I get. Then sunday I will run the cables, wire it up, set the timing and see if it will fire.

I came in to get something to eat, I am fighting sticky lifters now, got the tank in, engine apart, and fuel lines mocked up (sort of).

Well, I got them bitchin lifters out using vise-grips. I broke one pair doing this. I got the cam out and decided I need to get some rest. So tomarrow I have to put the new cam and lifters in, set lifter preload, put the motor back together, run fuel line permenantley, run the new throttle and tv cables, wire up the motor and see what happens. Thats a very abbreviated list BTW. Hopefully monday I will be done. I cant wait to hear it idle with the new cam after I break it in.

                Sounds good.

There is not much to do as far as setting lifter preload unless you can use shims under the pedestal mount rockers. You can check preload with a torque wrench with a low range.

The gist of how to check preload is to have that cylinder off the ramp of the cam (on the base circle area). Finger tighten the rocker arm bolt until you just take up the slack so that the pushrod is just touching the lifter and rocker arm. Then set your torque wrench in an easy to see position like 12:00. Look how far the torque wrench has to turn before it clicks with the desired torque. You will want between 1/2 turn and 1 full turn. I am not 100% on the next sentence, but I believe it is true. Adding a shim will cause the pushrod to depress the lifter less for the same amount of torque. Thus if you originally took more than one turn to get to the desired torque, adding a shim will let you set the preload looser(less than 1 turn) for the same torque of the rocker bolt.

Crane cams sells a pack of shims with directions if it turns out you need them. I bought some at Summit.

A trick to installing the intake is to use RTV in place of the front and rear intake gaskets. If you do this, make sure you have a tall enough bead of RTV. I like to put the RTV on the block, then carefully lower the intake onto the block. If your bead of RTV is too short, there could be a gap between the intake and the block at the front and back. You might want to lay the side gaskets in place and set the intake on to see how large the gap is that will need to be filled.

Things have been going really slow. I was really sick sunday which really screwed with my planning.

The motor is all back together except for the power steering pump and alt. I need to get my fuel line connected to the pump and run it back to the filter and hook it up. Its really tight next to the steering box to bend the line. I keep thinking its gonna kink. I am about ready to say f*@K it and run a rubber hose for it ghetto style. Also the distributor doesnt feel like it is all the way seated but it might just be me(about a 1/4 to high me thinks). If I take care of those two I can get going, finish this, and try to run this thing.

I thought I would have been done today but sunday really threw things off. I havent been able to work on the car very long each day since I have been working this week. I get what little bit I can do after work and thats it. I feel like I should call off work and finish it, but my uncle needs help and I need cash.

The distributor probably is not fully seated. It needs to mesh with the oil pump driveshaft. Ford had different length oil pump driveshafts for TFI distributors compared to Duraspark. Not sure if this will be an issue for you. You may just not have the driveshaft seated in the distributor fully.

The factory uses short lengths of rubber line to connect the hard line on the frame to the fuel pump. They need to do this because the engine moves as it is torqued in its rubber motor mounts.

If it 1/4" too high, just bump the motor over while putting a very slight pressure down on the distributor and it will mesh with the oil pump drive shaft and drop into place.

I had it seated once and pulled it out, so I got to mesh that oil pump driveshaft. I'm gonna head out and run this forsaken fuel line.

I just got back in, I fixed the fuel line issue and the distributor. I put back all the accesories and the radiator and fan. I put on most of the hoses, except for that damn 90* one from the water neck to the pump. Now I have to finish my fuel feed line to the carb, wire the ignition, replace all the fluids and adjust the cables.

I am starting to get used to working till 4-6pm, and working on my car till 10:30. It sucks, but I am not as tired now from earlier this week. I'm so pissed that I dont have any time to go workout tho (starting to really bother me since I have never taken more that 3 days off in over a year).
