    SQUEALL

my 1988 crown vic is squeallin took it to the mech, and he found that the pulley on the alternator is able to spin (the fan lookin pulley). he said it shouldnt move that easy or at all. if i loosen the bolts and try to tighten it am i going to just have to replace a tensioner pulley?or will wrenching the alternator over and re tightening it do the trick? im lookin for the most easy way to do this. help me out please.

There is a bolt on top the alternater and one at the bottom. The bottom bolt is the pivot, so loosen it just enough to allow play. The top one needs to be loose enough to rotate the alternator. Do that and while prying the alternator toward the driver's fender (make sure the belt is tight, but not excessively tight), torque down the top bolt. Tighten the bottom one and turn on the engine to make sure you're fixed.

it would be a good idea to change the belt if unsure of it's age

Gatorback. I broke one, but dont drive for a few miles with a belt squeeling like a stuck pig and you will be fine. I think i need to add a few tensioners to get more belt wrap. still squeels on occasion.

I think the average is about 1/4 inch of slack.
