Got a Grand Marquis I have been noticing lately on longer trips 60 miles or so in the heat that my fuel tank is becoming pressurized where I am smelling fuel in the passenger compartment. I must have an evap line choked or plugged somewhere and I'm looking for anyone else who may have had this problem and can put me on the right part without some troubleshooting. I don't know if the solenoid has gone bad to my charcoal canister or what but I will look at that next weekend. Got home today, cracked the fuel cap, excessive pressure came out for awhile and car actually shut down from venting the cap. Waited a few seconds and it started fine so something has got to be plugged somewhere.

probably the check valve at the top of the tank, not so much the solenoid. Even if that wasn't working it would vent pressure out through the charcoal canister.
no idea why the engine would stall from letting pressure out. That doesn't really make sense. If it was under vacuum that would make more sense. That would simply be the gas cap is bad. it has a check valve to let air in but not out. The one at the top feeding to the evap stuff lets vapor out but not air in.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

that's whats happening excessive pressure to where when you open gas cap there is such a long vent that its almost blowing fuel out with the fumes.The draw shut car down. my old 1980 gm did almost the same thing but it was a leak in the tailpipe heating the fuel tank. No exhaust leak here something not venting properlyComment

How much fuel is in the tank when it is having this problem? Does this happen after a fill up? or does the tank level have nothing to do with your symptoms?

fuel cap was problem. shop manual states approx -.5 to 2.1 psi cap was not releasing excessive pressureComment
