High idle and "Check engine " light

I was driving my 89 Colony park today and I noticed the "Check engine " light flashed a few times while coasting to a light and while slowing down for traffic. When I pulled in my driveway the idle was way up, like 2000 RPMs. The light never came on again, but the idle would not come down. I shut the car off and waited 5 minutes before starting it again.
It idled normal and no light. Any ideas? WagonMan

Maybe a dirty IAC or throttle blade? Other than that maybe check the wiring to the IAC to be sure it's not worn in a spot and grounding out somewhere.
These are highly engineered precision vehicles, the first step in diagnosing the problem is to strike the suspected offending part sharply and repeatedly with a blunt object, then re-test.

Did you read the codes? I would suspect and EGR code but I'm not sure if they turn the light on. Not all codes cause the light to come on.

not much sets the light, but a bum TPS will do it and that might mess with the idle. Code scan time

Also, is the ECM's temperature sensor connected/good? I accidentally left mine disconnected and when I got to work the idle was up to 2k or so. Plugged it back in and all was fine. Opps.
