At first I thought this was a hot-starter issue because it would struggle to crank (more than usual) when this started happening, and even the fender solenoid let a little smoke out during extended cranking. I swapped out the starter and solenoid, cranked strong, but still wouldn't start (until it cooled off)...
It definitely has spark and fuel, spraying TB cleaner in doesn't even make it sputter when this happens. I can definitely see spark arcing when I pull a wire, and I even tried a new coil this time in case it was weak or being affected by heat (does a coil's body need to be grounded? I didn't fasten it down, only plugged it in and let it sit there)
I thought I had this taken care of with a 'should be good' IAC motor buuutt.....
This time it stalled while making a tight turn-around (it's always done that) and wouldn't re-start in a random neighborhood when I decided to eyeball a multi-house yard sale on the way to the landfill (glad this didn't happen at the landfill!) Luckily I was close enough to a friend that needed to run errands anyway, and he shuttled me back and forth to get tools to dick around with it and kill time to let it cool. Once again, nothing I did made a bit of difference while it was hot, but once about two hours passed it fired right up like nothing was wrong...
I've been letting it idle in the driveway for an hour now... still starts right back up great... wtf!
Could I be loosing compression when its hot? It still runs as good as it ever did when it runs (not great, but just fine for a beater truck)...
Maybe I need to break down and try a new IAC? Is it possible a box panther IAC wont work right for a 5.0 truck motor??
Are there any other tricks to try while it's acting up??
I love my old vehicles but I have a feeling that a 'third strike' will have me looking for something a bit newer... I still haven't touched the head gaskets on the '91...
