    Exhaust smell,

Now that it is colder outside, Within ~5 min of starting the engine, I see heat smoke like when a pot boils and steam rises slowly, but this smells like exhaust.

Could it be a leak in a hose or a bypass valve for the smog?

I would like to think so, since this event abates once the engine is done warming up. Same deal after hard acceleration.

Otherwise, the 60 mile trip out here was uneventful, the car performing like I remember, really really nice in the highway.

Normal on a cold day. You'll know a coolant smoke show when you see it, much heavier, can have a somewhat sweet smell, and the cloud just lingers like an old school mosquito fogger.

Like GM_Guy said it's typical for these when cold. Computer throws in extra fuel during warm up period so the exhaust smells a tad.
