    Smog pump (?) Locked up.

What I believe is the smog pump (someone correct me if I'm wrong) locked up on my brothers 91 MGM today and destroyed the belt. If I'm right about this, the smog pump is the unit attached on the lowest part of the left side of the engine below the a/c compressor if you're looking at it from the front of the car. That being said, is there a way to bypass that and just run a smaller belt to the a/c compressor, or is it a necessity to run the car without issues?

Thanks! Will that fit around the idler pulley or will I have to remove that? And are there any adverse effects of not using the smog pump or no?

Take it off and throw it away, plug off what you can't remove of whats left, then get a smaller belt.
        You'll still need the idler.

The shorter belt goes over the stock idler and over the AC compressor.

Smog pumps are stupid but if you live in a state with smog nazi inspections, you need to have it or you'll fail visual inspection. Functionally it does almost nothing, and I don't believe anyone has ever had any ill effect from removing it other than some goofy noises went away.

Sweet. I'll have to pick a day to go over there and tear all that crap out. Thankfully he don't need his a/c right now so for the time being he'll be okay without it.

No smog nazis in the county my brother lives in so we're all good there. As far as noises go, could a bad (or going bad) smog pump cause a weird, subtle buzzing sound at idle? I never heard it personally but my brother complained about it alot.

They make all kinds of weirdass noise. Mine sounded like a garbage disposal full of forks so I've bypassed it for now. In another year I have to appease the smog Nazis here in stupid California so i'll hook it back up. That belt # should work, but it may be VERY tight getting it on, mine was.

Mine started sounding like a procharger about a week before it seized up.

The one on the Towncar sounded like cheesy 1950's alien movies. That warbly flying saucer noise came out from under the hood at idle. The Mark VII sounded like a drunk with a maraca.

Hahahahahahahaha!!!! I love all these descriptions. Yes, smog pumps can make a variety of dumbass sounds. If I didn't live in stupid California I'd have taken the thing out to the desert and shot it full of holes already. It still spins freely so it stays, albeit disconnected for the time being.

                      Just curious.
Would removal of the belt from the smog pump free up any horse power and /or help fuel economy?

Yep. Enough to make any perceivable difference though? Probably not.

Mainly pulling all the smog shit out just really cleans it up under the hood.

If the pump is really dragging from internal failure you might notice it. Otherwise not really.

Aside from noise reduction, I noticed absolutely no difference power-wise or mileage-wise bypassing the smog pump with a short belt. No would be my answer.

When I pulled up to the parking lot after he called me saying his car was smoking and I inspected the damage, I saw the belt was gone. He said the car kept stalling when he put it in gear and the squealing from the belt was horrible. He was scared to drive it and I told him to fire it up. He was amazed that it actually did. I had remembered him saying a few weeks ago that his car was acting up and was underpowered. So I told him to try and do a burnout when we left the parking lot. He was amazed that it did. So I guess in his case it did give a little more power since the pump had been on its way out for a bit. Enough to do burnouts again at least [emoji6]

In the mean time I gotta replace his brake switch and then get a shorter belt for the a/c, and probably the other one as well since it looks pretty bad. Once the weather warms up I'll strip the smog pump and use it for a nice boat anchor
