    Wont start - new battery

Hi, Mercury Grand marquis Colony park 1985.

Yesterday it started normal. Had it run for a while to add some gearbox oil. Today it should go to the garage for 2 yearly test (law here in the Netherlands).
Just wanted to start it to bring it to the garage, nothing....
Recently put in a brand new battery. Anyone an idea????? He did this before so we thought lets put in a new battery the one in is was old. But this is weird.

What exactly does it do? Crank and not start? Does not even crank? No sound at all? Bobby

Gearbox oil? Be sure to use Automatic transmission fluid if that is an automatic like it should be. Mercon III should do you proper.

Anyhow, what happens when you flip the key over? Does it crank? Does it click? Does it do nothing? If it does nothing or clicks you could try replacing the starter solenoid which is located on the fenderwell near the battery. Try taking using a screwdriver to touch the two big posts on the solenoid together with the key in the run position, let us know what happens.

If you get absolutely nothing, it sounds like dirty battery cables to me. Or perhaps the small wire on the starter relay has gotten loose or dirty if you have lights and such. I've had both issues on my car. When the small wire gets loose, the car has normal power but the engine will not crank.

Guy at work has an F-150 with a 302. Last week it wouldn't start. Wouldn't take a jump either. The truck had power, and the starter relay was making a nice healthy "clunk!" So finally, I just turned the key to start and held it there for a couple seconds. All of a sudden it fired up.

dead spot in the starter will do that. If it does it again, whap the starter with a hammer to see if it goes. if it does, tell him to go buy a starter.

Yep, sometimes just a rotten battery/ground cable can do it too. Had this happen on my '81 zephyr many many years ago. After I got so pissed I kicked a dent in the side of it, I took a close look at the cables and pulled one off my dead mustang. Goddamn thing fired right up, and had a dent in it DOH!
