I'll ask again....what are your goals for the car? What type of realistic budget do you have? The only GT40s i would use would be junkyard stuff...anything over $500-600 in factory stuff is silly, just spend the extra $ on good heads that have decent re-sale if you ever part with them.........i'm partial to twisted wedges myself but AFR's work real well also...its basically a coin toss between them, not a huge fan of edelbrocks street type heads (performer/rpm/estreet) from a power perspective, they just dont ever seem to make the power of TFS or AFR and basically cost the same new...........

351 is going to want some real heads....thats where the power is.............

My plans for the car? Simple. To keep it running until I am too old to hold a driver's license.

I was originally going for a 460 as was the point of the thread but I've been convinced to work with the existing 351W.

You say my engine is going to want "real heads", and I keep hearing about these GT40s, so I would like to acquire them.

My plan is simply to acquire the parts piece by piece to do an engine rebuild, and then when I have the parts together (and the savings for the labour!), I will have the engine rebuilt.

Similar idea with the transmission, in fact.

What are your power goals though? Mild? Wild? Somewhere in between?

You can't just throw parts at an engine and hope for the best, you need a well thought out combo.

Honestly in your case, I'd find a local reputable performance shop, tell them what your goals are, and let them recommend you parts.

I apologize for being vague, I don't mean to be.

I want more torque to get out of the snow and mud when I get stuck. And, well, I wouldn't mind more better horsepower either to perform emergency maneouvers.

          So yeah. :|

Gets heads, intake and carb. Then do exhaust. That's all it sounds like you need. Heads can be found at a JY for 100$ pulled. Get valve springs front Alexsparts.com for 100$ and then buy a good carb. A good carb is around 500$ for a demon or holley. Then it'll be noticeably quicker.

Just take your 351w to a performance shop, if you have 7-8 grand (that's what it'll take) go 408w, bored, stroked, $1200-2k for heads, carb setup will be cheaper, but know that you're taking a mileage hit, you might see 8-14 city or 15-20 hwy with a performance build. Like the other dudes have said, cam is the last thing, it needs low end grunt or you'll bog off the line, and you have to match it to your intake/heads/etc.

A simple rebuild with decent aftermarket heads/intake could come in under $4k if you're willing to go used parts off craigslist.

All of it depends on what you want to do, fry tires, smoke imports off the line, get 28mpg cruising on the highway (it's been done), but there are tradeoffs to make. You don't want to go full race motor that needs a rebuild every couple years, you want something that makes the butt-dyno happy, pushes you back in the seat, but probably not something that rips the clothes off of women standing on the sidewalk (because then you'd have to pull a u-turn to go check them out).

Then, once you have your motor sorted, you will probably destroy your transmission, but we have the technology, good rebuild with higher stall speed torque converter (do you want your motor to scream 3500) before the clunk, or wind up and kick you in the ass (2500, 2700, 2800 all kinds of numbers available), it can also shift as hard as you want it to, neck-snapping, or butter-smooth, your choice, just drop around $2k or so.

I will start there I guess. Still trying to find them GT40 heads.

So $2000 for a transmission upgrade to go with Bobcat's suggestion.

But you can still get more fun on a budget for now, bigger heads/intake, better gearing, more fun. You can feel out the budget performance improvements and see if you want to go wilder.

Budget that for when/if you kill it. You will not break anything that isn't easily and cheaply upgraded or replaceable, and new cores to rebuild are everywhere for these cars.

You won't need to change the AOD. You won't be nearing that unless it's a stroker. No way Jose. Throw a valve body on it (Like I've said a million times!) and it'll be mint. The only other problem may be the torque converter since old AODs tend to balloon the converter. Mine was starting to. (Bolts were rubbed noticeably.) IIRC AODs can handle 400wrhp and you won't be nearing that.

From what I hear, he just wants a quick cruiser. Start where I said and then if you're not satisfied, change it.

I'm in the process of rebuilding the Ford 460:

Heads, cam, timing chain, intake, carb, dizzy, water pump, etc
Costing me $2500....and that is just for parts....labor is on me.

Definitely will cost you more $$$....
why not pick up your favorite land yacht with a 460 already in? Less $$$ bro

If you read the thread you'd see some people have convinced me to give the existing 351 some attention instead.
