yeah, pull it off and fix it when you have a chance. Or don't fix it. I removed mine from both cars when it got noisy. Its still bolted on to the Mark VII, but the pulley is off and the pump is bypassed.

I dont need to do anything special to remove the belt right? Like taking any pulley off or anything I can just take it off? Ill add the belt back on once I get the smog pump removed.

Need to loosen the tensioner which is kinda shitty, though if your not going to reuse it just cut it off.

                    Thank you!

Next question: Is there a rebuild kit for this smog pump? I thought it would be like a thirty dollar part. It just blows air! Autozone wants $238! I couldn't believe it!

order from Rock Auto. It's only $160 ($8 for core).

If you want to cap the line, I found that a cap off a brake clean bottle and a pipe clamp work quite well. For the short time I needed it to...

On my '87 mgm air pump, what's the function of the 1/2" hose that runs from the pump to somewhere under the intake?

That feeds two lines in the back of the heads. It pumps air into the heads right after the exhaust valves in certain situations, as opposed to into the cats. My understanding is air is pumped directly to the cats to help warm them up, while it's pumped to the back of the heads to keep them from overheating while still injecting oxygen to burn any raw fuel that sneaks through.

Here is a picture of roughly what's back there, though in your car most of that valve nonsense at the top left is on the fender, not behind the engine. Circled in blue is where it connects to the heads.

John, thanks for the reply. On my car, the larger hose going to the secondary valve and thence to the heads has been cut away. Remaining is the open secondary valve at the red line in your picture and the metal pipe to the heads. The hose and valve feeding the cats have been removed. The smaller hose I'm asking about exits the pump before the larger hose referenced hereinabove.

it supplies extra vacuum to the cruise servo when the engine isn't making enough on it's own. I've never found this to be needed. I haven't had a smog pump in a long time and the cruise works perfectly. If you follow it back, you'll find a check valve, and further up the line, a tee. Move the check valve to where the tee is, and remove the small hose down to the smog pump. Make sure you point the check valve with the arrow towards the vacuum tree or the cruise won't work.
