    Injector cleaner

    Dear Panthers,

302/345k/rebuilt at 100K. Slight miss at low speed when first starting out. Disappears at higher speed and doesn't reappear at stoplights. Tuneup less than 5k, vacuum okay (though it occasionally kicks out of cruise control on a hill). The injectors have never been touched and I'm considering running a can of cleaner through them. Comments?

There was a guy (Dad's friend) that used a machine to clean the injectors. Don't ask me what or how he did it. But when I took my 87 Ford tudor which hesitated/hiccupped, etc....It ran LIKE A ROCKET after it was cleaned! Unfortunately the guy retired. We will never know!

You could use this thing called Powerfoam. A product made by amsoil. You spray it in the intake and it foams up. Did wonders to my Corolla with 160k

I'd run some injector cleaner through a tank.

i'll bet mechanic put lousy cap and rotor on the car again.........it's happened a few times before.
i'm not thinking cleaner would do much, but you can try some in the gas, it wont hurt.
we talked about this 2+ years ago, those injectors should be replaced, they are original to the car. i can have a look see when i visit.

HOW much of a PITA is it to replace injectors?

I was always told these injectors are bullet proof and just need a cleaning

pull the upper intake, unhook the wiring and fuel supply, unbolt the fuel rail and pry out injectors, put new ones in, assemble. you cant clean them at home, the shops sell flow matched rebuilt injectors for around 90 bucks......12 bucks each could save that in fuel in a hurry, if the spray pattern is deformed due to residuals they wont work as well.

oh donald i know its only been 5000 miles but you may have fouled a spark plug and its not firing well at idle, that engine runs good yet but is getting tired, when i started servicing the old girl she had 22" of vacuum, in 2012 when i checked it, only 18" which isnt great, get below 17" and they really run messed up. number 8 spark plug usually fouls first, yours had crud on it two yrs ago when i changed them. miss working on the shooting brake.

Hardest part of the job can be unhooking the fuel supply lines, but if you are careful its not that much trouble. You can probably also get the rail to lift enough to change the injectors without unhooking them. I know its possible on a fox body car at any rate. Lube the injector O-rings before assembly, or you will slice them. While that does fine to degrease the car after it catches fire, it doesn't do much for your piece of mind, transmission, or wiring harness.

meh... I don't even unhook the supply lines if it's just a remove and replace. Of course, there's a LOT of stuff I don't do by the book either.

Worst part of the job is when the heads of the bolts holding the fuel rails on break off. Then its drill and re-tap time. WagonMan
