    Backpressure

So, last night I flushed my PS and upgraded it with a cooler, then I got bored, that progressed in stupidity, and the whole thing ended up with my car having no exhaust pipes after the cats. That's right, everything behind the cats is gone - the Y-pipe, the muffler, the tail pipe, everything It's pretty damn loud, but not abnoxiously loud so that I get pulled over. Now it seems that my guilty concience is getting back to me, so I oughttaask - is running so little backpressure (basically only the one created by the cats and the manifolds) gonna screw up something on the engine?

those quad cats muffle things a lot. Did a water pump one one with just the H pipe and no mufflers and it sounded like it had mufflers on it still.

Aight, guys, thansk - open pipes it is for now. I have a cat-less dual exhaust I snatched from a junked cop car, I'm thinking of doing that with some small mufflers and pipes exitting before the rear tires, but that'll have to wait as I have some more urgent projects with the car.

As for the loudness - a kid at my school has an '89 Mustang LX with sideipes and no cats, and his car with the 2.5" Flowmasters sounds exactly like mine with cats only

Back in the day when I had single exhaust, I everything behind the cats just for shits and giggles. That damn thing was loud! Vibrated my ass and made it hard to hear other people inside the cabin lol

GL, I have no problem making a conversation in the car, not really that loud. Until I floor it, that is

Ahhh, I see why. I didn't have downturns bolted on, it was just dumping under the car :drug:

I drove my car with just an h-pipe for a few days and even with cats that thing killed my ears. Doing 70-75 on the highway with an exhaust that dumped right below your seats was friggen hell.

But I must say, the super turbos I have on there now aren't noisy enough.

Nitroracer, did you have any turndowns? I made mine by just cutting the old Y-pipe and swapping the left and the right, and although they're just a 45-degree bend they make a huge difference - the car is still decently loud on the outside, but inside is much better, I listen to my music just as loud/quiet as before, and I can hold a normal conversation without even raising my voice. Don't have to yell in the cell phone either The only thing I don't like too much is the low-frequency boom-boom rumble at low RPMs, but after driving at 45 (so basically idling in overdrive) for like 5-10 minutes it no-longer bothers me.

Chachi, I like your thinking. And taste for beer too

I sawed off my exhaust right after the Y-Pipe. It's loud at start up early in the morning (5am) when I leave for work. Now that it's colder outside, I don't like the exhaust blowing forward if there's a tailwind at a light. Looks like the car is on fire. I'll be finishing the exhaust soon. I love to look of cars with dual tail pipes when it's cold outside.

And WTF would be the point to ditch the muffler and the tailpipe, but to keep the Y-pipe? Low-end torque doesn't suffer much if you remove everything completely, besides now you're just dumping hot exhaust gases straight towards the tank, or at least the pressurized fuel line...
