have you ever checked how sloppy the timing chain is? you've got a shitton of miles on that motor. sloppy chain will tend to make it surge an buck randomly like that.

You're probably right. I wasn't sure if the bucking was being caused by that too. I plan on changing out the chain this Thanksgiving. I am putting together a parts shopping list since I will also be doing the oil pan gasket.

you can rock the crank back and forth with the distributor cap off to get an idea if that might be the problem. If the crank will rotate without the rotor following, thats a sign that its about done.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
