    Fuel injector seals question

I bought an 89 Colony Park that had an engine fire due to the fact that a mechanic forgot put the bolts in the fuel rails. I swapped a used intake from an 87 with all the wiring, injectors etc. still intact. Car started right up and runs great! BUT, it has a fuel leak at one of the injectors on the intake side. I took it apart and the injectors have green seals at the top and black at the bottom. I thought they were the same? And to add confusion, I took apart the burnt intake and the seals were brown top and bottom. Anyone know if they are the same top and bottom and year to year? WagonMan

Someone maybe replaced one set of O rings. Same O ring top and bottom if you buy replacement parts though.

Thanks, I thought so. I put two new seals on the injector and it still leaks. The hole where it sits in was very corroded. I wire brushed it with a hole cleaner from my furnace, and wiped it clean with thinner. The injector was corroded as well where the seal sits. Does the plastic spacer do anything? It too is crummy looking and it doesn't spin freely on the injector. Maybe I need to replace the injector. WagonMan

An injector o-ring 'kit' comes with new rings, spacers and caps. It could be that without the spacer (if you left it out), the-o-ring sits a little sideways and won't seal, especially if the corrosion was bad enough to pit the aluminum.

the spacer keeps the O ring in position and makes sure it seals. Without it, the ring probably will leak.

I think the kit is actually sold as an injector rebuild kit or something like that. You can get just the O rings in a 4 pack and it doesn't come with the other parts.

I did use the spacer, but it fits real tight and doesn't spin like the others. I will buy a rebuilt seal kit tomorrow and do the job again. I did "energize" the fuel rail before I put the plenum back on and it didn't leak. Only after I put it all back together did I notice it was seeping again. WagonMan

I talked to a friend that is a mechanic. He said the injector is bad. He said it should not leak gas at the bottom, if anything it would have a vacuum leak. Gas leaks are only at the top where the rail meets. I have extra injectors, so I will switch it out and see what happens. WagonMan

                That sounds logical.

Did you wipe down the o-rings with a bit of engine oil on your finger before installing the injector? Thats what invariably seals them, the o-ring swells due to the oil making a tight fit.

                  Alex.

Success! I replaced the fuel injector with a used one that didn't have corrosion. I did lube up the seals before installing the injectors. THANKS to all who chimed in. WagonMan
