I threw a quart of 15w40 in my engine which is leaking oil like a sieve. My intention was to thicken the oil slightly if possible. I noticed the oil pressure light going off yesterday. Could the "OIL PRESSURE" light on my digi dash be indicating HIGH PRESSURE? Or is it only a low pressure indicator?

It's a switch that turns the light on when your oil pressure is too low. Fix your leak and hope for the best.
A quart of thicker oil is going to do sweet fuck all.Last edited by 1990LTD; 06-26-2014, 11:11 AM.sigpic

Its a low/no pressure indicator only. I think its less than 5 psi or something. Thick oil does very little to slow down a leak. You'd do a lot better to plug the hole than to dump thicker oil in there.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

So if you have a cluster with the red engine light of death and a check oil light the engine light is for over heating and oil pressure less than 5 psi and you check oil light is basically a redundant light for oil pressure less than 5 psi? I wonder why they bothered adding the check oil light.

You do have the oil pressure light. It's the general "oh shit" red light. Lights up for very low (your bearings are already fucked or the engine is at <300rpm or so) pressure, or for extreme overheating. Someone on here coined the "replace engine light" name because generally if it's hot enough or worn out enough for it to come on while the car is running you need a rebuild.

You do. If its analog dash, both warning lamps are in the cluster of bulbs above the headlight switch. If its the digital, I think the low pressure light is built into the message center display. Not sure where the check oil is, maybe message center, maybe it's own lamp. Towncars did not have the red replace engine lamp though, or at least not the analog dash cars. They had a temperature gauge. The digital dash cars had an overheat indicator in the message center that was basically the replace engine lamp though.
The check oil lamp comes on about 1 quart low. It should still have normal oil pressure with 1 quart missing. If you top it up when needed, you should never see the red light of doom from low oil. If its ignored, and you get to about 3 quarts low, it'll suck air and lose oil pressure. If both lights are on, basically its telling you that you're a moron for not checking the oil 2 quarts ago.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Interesting. I never knew that about the check oil light. I'm guessing there's a separate sensor for the oil level in cars that were equipped with that light in their dash?

I bought that type of oil pan planning to retrofit in a beeper or something hooked up to that sensor. Fox Mustangs used it as well.

The low oil sensor is near where the dipstick goes into the block. If you find a wire sticking out of that side of the oil pan, thats what its for. Honestly, its among the better ideas for warning lights on cars if you ask me. Far more useful than a low washer fluid level indicator is.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
