very valid question actually. I typically pay close attention to how the old one comes out and replace the same way, but it's good to know what it's supposed to be.

so the top goes into the engine block.. only reason i am confused is because when i took it out it was the opposite

no, it is the opposite: pointy end OUT he said. spring end goes into the block.

also there's a small hole drilled into one side-- that should be on top (so air can vent)

Yeah, the bigger solid lump looking part with the spring is what needs to be in the engine block.

I should have clarified... some T-stats you put in the housing first then install the housing to the block (I forget how ours is, even though I just put one in the 91, lol), so 'pointy end out' is vague for some applications.
