2000 mustang gt vs 88 gm gs

currently i own a 2000 mustang gt coupe but am seriously considering selling it for an 88 gm gs with an ls package. back in '88 my great aunt, great uncle, and grandfather all bought a gm. my uncles was just a gs, my aunts was a gs with an ls package, this is the one i might get thats in nearly mint condition with 70k on the clock, and my grandpas, currently my dads car was the black ls with the formal top and a factory ordered red interior, that one needs a lot of work. anyway i know a gm can get up and go but only making 150 stock ponnys what can i do to get it to perform close to what my mustang does now? i know in that year mustang theyre the same block so what can i change in the gm to free up some power? im open to anything, ill get around $8500 for the mustang and im buying this for around $1500, so ill have around $6000 after i put in the stereo. any ideas? im glad i found this forum, wasnt sure if anyone else enjoyed these cars.

    Wow, nice ride!

You could easily build a stroker small block ford, and stab it into there

Sooner or later, the efi gods will pipe up, cause i'm more of a carb guy.

You can do several mods to these cars to affect handling, acceleration, brakes, etc...

Welcome to GMN! I found that once you drive and own a box, no other car is quite the same.

      Is emissions a concern?
If not, then you have many ways to skin this cat. You can easily outrun a stock Mustang with $6000. What you need to decide is if you need to keep cruise and AC. This will effect your total cost.
Tweaking an Explorer 302 is the easiest and cheapest way to reach your goal. This can be done with EFI or a carb.
